Marathi subtitle & caption generator
Marathi captions can be written in मराठी Devanagari, in English letters, or translated into English, with timing on every word. Marathi shares its script with Hindi, so it can use the editor's Devanagari faces, Tiro Devanagari Marathi among them.
No Marathi templates have been published yet. Any template in the full gallery can still caption Marathi: letters its own font cannot draw come from the Marathi fallback face.
Captioning in Marathi
Marathi is written in Devanagari, the script Hindi uses, so a Marathi video can take most of the same fonts and templates. The differences are in the detail: a few letters Hindi seldom needs, one typeface cut specially for Marathi, and a grammar that fastens endings onto words instead of placing small words after them.
Letters Hindi rarely asks for
ळ is everyday Marathi, in words such as बाळ, वेळ and टाळी, and every Devanagari face in the editor has it. ऱ, the eyelash form of र, appears in spellings like ऱ्हास; Bakbak One is the one face without it. ॲ, which Marathi uses for the English a sound in borrowed words such as ॲप and ॲक्शन, is missing from Alkatra, Halant, Karma and Teko.
A missing letter does not leave a hole in the caption. The character is drawn from a fallback face instead, which can look out of step with the letters beside it. If that happens, choose a face that has the letter under Native script font.
Tiro Devanagari Marathi and the fallback face
Tiro Devanagari is listed three times, in Hindi, Marathi and Sanskrit versions, and they are not copies of one another. The Marathi cut gives ल and श the shapes Marathi printing has long preferred, and draws क, ट, ण, प, म and ह a little differently from the Hindi cut as well. For a serif caption meant for Marathi readers, it is the version to start with.
A template set in a Latin font has no Devanagari letters of its own, so its Marathi words are drawn in Baloo 2, the rounded bold face Devanagari falls back to when a font has none. Choosing a Native script font changes only the Devanagari; English words in the same caption stay in the template's own face. Some starting points:
- Mukta or Noto Sans Devanagari, for captions that carry whole sentences: both have ळ, ऱ and ॲ.
- Khand, Rajdhani or Pragati Narrow, when a long Marathi word has to share a row: all three are narrow and carry ॲ.
- Tiro Devanagari Marathi, for a serif with the Marathi letter shapes described above.
Endings, romanised spelling and translation
Marathi joins endings to its words where Hindi writes separate ones: घरात for घर में, मुंबईला for मुंबई को. A Marathi caption therefore holds fewer, longer words, and a style that shows four words at a time can crowd a vertical frame. The automatic emphasis mark favours long words, so in Marathi it often lands on a word with an ending attached; if it picks the wrong one, select the word you mean and press E.
Romanised Marathi is converted from the Devanagari transcript, and a few sounds have no fixed spelling in English letters: ळ is written l, L or lh, and च may be ch or ts. Pick one spelling for each name and use it throughout. An English translation reaches viewers outside Maharashtra, but its word timings are estimated within each phrase, so watch it through before exporting.
Questions
Why does one Marathi letter look different from the rest of the caption?
The font chosen does not have it, most often ॲ or ऱ, so that one character comes from a fallback face. Pick a Native script font that has it, such as Mukta or Tiro Devanagari Marathi.
Can Hindi templates be used for Marathi?
Yes. Their Devanagari is the script Marathi uses too, so the words appear correctly. The one thing to check is whether the template's font has ॲ and ऱ, if your captions use them.
