Captioning in English (India)
A clip spoken in English is transcribed as English and stays English: there is no romanised or translated version to choose, because the words are already in Latin letters. What takes care is the Indian words inside the English, how many words a short-form caption should hold, and what capitals and spacing do to a line.
Indian words inside English speech
Indian English carries names, places and words from other languages: a festival, a dish, a neighbourhood, a word like yaar dropped into a sentence. The transcript spells each one in Latin letters as it heard it, and many are spelt two ways in everyday writing, Ganpati or Ganapati, Bengaluru or Bangalore. Pick one form and correct it everywhere it appears; a correction is free and does not spend transcription minutes again.
When a speaker talks mostly in Hindi with English words mixed in, choose Hindi as the language rather than English. Transcribed as English, the clip is matched against English words, so Hindi phrases come back as English words that sound similar. Transcribed as Hindi with romanised output, the Hindi stays Hindi and still appears in Latin letters, the way Hinglish captions are usually written.
How many words a caption holds
On a single-line template, Max words per caption, in the caption settings, sets how many words appear together, from one to eight. Fewer words means more captions, each on screen for a shorter time, which suits fast vertical video; more words suits a talk or an interview where the viewer has time to read a full phrase.
Two other settings sit beside it. Min duration keeps a very short caption on screen long enough to be read, and Gap between captions sets how long the screen may stay empty between one caption and the next before the next one appears.
Capitals, spacing and the Latin faces
The text case buttons set a template in capitals or small caps. Capitals look louder and suit a few words at a time; across a longer line every letter is the same height, so word shapes are harder to tell apart and the line reads more slowly than mixed case.
Condensed faces fit more on a row, and bolder faces hold up over a busy background. Among the faces the templates use:
- Anton, Bebas Neue and Oswald: tall and condensed, for a few loud words.
- Montserrat, Poppins and Outfit: rounder geometric sans-serifs that stay readable over whole sentences.
- Archivo Black: very heavy, for a caption that has to win against the picture.
Emphasis and the spotlight
Up to one word per caption arrives marked for emphasis, shown on templates that style an emphasised word. The automatic pick skips words such as the, is, and and you, but it cannot know which word the speaker leaned on. Click that word and press E to mark it, or press E again to clear it; S does the same for the spotlight, where the template has one.
Letter spacing, Word spacing and Line spacing are in the style panel. Wide letter spacing suits capitals more than lowercase, and where a template stacks several rows, Line spacing keeps them from crowding each other.
Questions
Can an English video get captions in Hindi or another Indian language?
No. Captions come out in the language that was spoken. Translation runs one way only, from the Indian languages into English.
Why did a Hindi phrase come out as English words?
The clip was transcribed as English, so the speech was matched to English words. If the speaker talks mostly in Hindi, transcribe it as Hindi with romanised output instead.
Can every caption be a single word?
Yes, wherever the template draws one row: open the caption settings and move Max words per caption down to one.
